Factorio oil refinery1/13/2024 ![]() You usually do this by overproducing and overusing plastic since that's the biggest eater of petroleum. When I set up a coal liquefaction plant I usually barrel up some heavy oil and take it along with me to jump start the liquefaction process. You just need enough heavy oil to start the liquefaction process. Coal liquefaction is almost identical to advanced oil production except that it uses coal as an input instead of crude oil and it way over produces heavy oil. You can set up a coal liquefaction plant. There is another solution to a lack of heavy oil. It will eventually balance out as you get all your belts upgraded and sufficient robots produced. I'm guessing that you are using a lot of heavy oil to make lubricant to upgrade to blue belts and to make robots. This seems to keep the refineries running, but while I am getting good petroleum and light oil production (100/100), I'm still essentially only getting 0 heavy oil even though the refinery is working instead of output full. So I have updated things such that I am turning petroleum to solid fuel and light oil to solid fuel. Originally posted by Stephen of Blois:Thank you. It can be very frustrating until you have your epiphany and it all clicks into place. Advanced oil processing is the hardest production chain for a new player to learn. These production chains give you the ability to balance your use of each of the 3 types of advanced oils. Surplus petroleum can be made into solid fuel and you can set your machinery up to use the petroleum made solid fuel before the light oil made solid fuel which gives you a "safety relief valve" of sorts. In the mean while you can also solve your current problem with a very wasteful method of flushing the tanks/pipes of the oil type(s) that are stalling your production. ![]() Surplus petroleum can be made into solid fuel and you can set your machinery up to use the petroleum made solid fuel before the light oil made solid fuel which gives you a "safety relief valve" of sorts (this is very wasteful so you should try to avoid it as much as possible.) Surplus light oil can be cracked into petroleum which gives you a "safety relief valve" of sorts. Surplus heavy oil can be cracked into light oil which gives you a "safety relief valve" of sorts. Heavy oil is only used to make lubricant. Light oil is used to make solid fuel which can be used for power, fueling vehicles, and trains and light oil and solid fuel are used to make rocket fuel which you will also need a great deal of especially if you continue to play the same factory after your first rocket launch. You need sulfur to make explosives and sulfuric acid which is used to make blue circuits, batteries, and mine uranium ore. Petroleum is used to make sulfur and plastic you will need LOTS of plastic especially in the end game. Yes you need to use up all 3 types of oil to keep it flowing. I guess I'm confused as to how to get uninterrupted supply of all three oils. Is there a problem with this method? If I draw from only one of those tanks (e.g., the heavy oil tank) and the other two tanks fill (petroleum and light oil tanks) because I happen to not need any, it sounds like the refinery will not produce anymore oil at all. Then I would just draw off those tanks as needed and not really worry about the refinery anymore. This is a silly question, but my plan was to fill three storage tanks, one for petroleum, one for light oil, and one for heavy oil. Originally posted by Stephen of Blois:Thanks for your help.
